Story: The movie script deals around a submarine named Ghazi that is sent by Pakistan to help its army fighting war with Bangladesh in 1970. But the problem arises to Pakistan,  as Ghazi has to cross Indian waters to reach Bangladesh. Indian airforce carrier INS Vikrant safeguards coastal belt. Ghazi has to strike Vikranth in order to sail through Indian waters. Indian Navy gets alert receiving intelligence reports. So in order to tackle the deadly Ghazi, the Indian navy deploys the S-21 submarine which is managed by some able officers like

Arjun Varma (Rana),  Captain Ranvijay Singh (Kay Kay Menon) and Executive officer Devraj(Atul Kulkarni ) . They attack the enemy submarine near Visakhapatnam. What happened next forms the rest plot.

Performances :  Rana looked a stud of an Navy commander. He delivers decent performance and managed to hold the scenes in top notch way.  Right from his look to his emotional performance and dialogues delivery, Rana stands on top and carries the film on his shoulders.Even the efficient supporting cast K K Menon, Atul Kulkarni and Satyadev gave standout performance. They added much value to the movie. Taapsee did decent job as a refugee. Her role is pure fictional character to add some glamour to the film.

Analysis :

Ghazi is a mysterious episode of India – Pakistan war of 1971.  Director Sankalp Reddy has narrated this untold saga in a very engaging and gripping way. The whole Ghazi team has to be appreciated for their effort in making India’s first underwater war drama.  Director must be given full credit for building such a great fiction script by taking inspiration from true incidents. Of course, he has failed to some extent in blending screenplay with thrilling scenes and drama to give an interesting narration and to spare us from documentary feel.

The cinematography is major asset for the movie as it effortlessly transports us to that time period when this classified mission took place. If we get deeply connected  to the script,  surely cinematography almost makes us, as if we are inside the S-21 .  The director has paid special attention to the minute details, like the knobs on the engine, document papers, the surge of waves when a torpedo is launched, pipe bursts when one part of the submarine gets hit by a landmine. Director was clear with his script and narration and added nothing like extra commercial elements which saved the movie a lot. Music is good and  background score is excellent. While the story and the characters engaged us, seeing late actor Om Puri’s on screen triggered a bitter sweet memory. Editing could have been better as lengthy confrontational and debating scenes between lead cast may get weary on entertainment seeking audience. Actions episodes are dealt in perfect way.  Well-penned dialogues and top notch production values are the assets of the film. Good research has been made in order to showcase the real life commands and gestures used by Navy during war time. Art department does a magnificent job and showcased submarine in an excellent way. VFX needs special mention for maintaining the ocean and the sea bed effect.
